Prempeh II (1892 – 27 May 1970), born Nana Osei Agyeman Prempeh II, was the 14th Asantehene (King of Ashanti) of the Ashanti Empire in Ghana. He was born into the royal family and succeeded his uncle Osei Agyeman Prempeh I as Asantehene in 1931.
Under Prempeh II's reign, the Ashanti Empire saw significant modernization and development. He worked to improve education, health, and infrastructure, and played an important role in Ghana's independence movement.
In 1935, Prempeh II travelled to London to petition for the restoration of the Ashanti Confederacy, which had been dissolved by the British colonial government in 1896. He was successful, and the confederacy was reestablished in 1936.
Prempeh II also played a significant role in the establishment of Ghana's first political party, the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), and worked with other nationalist leaders to achieve Ghana's independence from British colonial rule in 1957.
After Ghana gained independence, Prempeh II served as a member of Parliament and as a representative of Ghana on the international stage. He died in 1970 and was buried in the Royal Cemetery in Kumasi, Ghana.
